New Rizal Documentary Focuses on Hero’s Stay in Germany

In celebration of the 160th Birth Anniversary of Dr. Jose Rizal on June 19, a two-years-in-the-making documentary will be shown featuring Rizal’s first trip to Europe. Titled “Finding Rizal in a Time of Barriers,” this documentary highlights lawmaker Loren Legarda’s 2019 visit at Heidelberg and Wilhelmsfeld, with Dr. Fritz Hack Ullmer, the great-grandson of Pastor Karl Ullmer who hosted Rizal for three months in Wilhelmsfeld in 1886. It was directed by playwright Floy Quintos. Historians Ambeth Ocampo and Dr. Mila Guerrero annotated aspects of Rizal’s Germany sojourn.
The production is in collaboration with the Department of Foreign Affairs – Philippine Embassy in Berlin and Philippine Consulate General in Frankfurt. It will air on the ABS-CBN News Channel on 19 June 2021, Saturday at 7:00 pm (Manila time) with simultaneous live streaming on ABS-CBN News YouTube channel and the Facebook Pages of the Department of Foreign Affairs, National Commission for Culture and the Arts, DepEd Philippines, Office of Deputy Speaker Loren Legarda, National Quincentennial Committee, National Historical Commission of the Philippines, National Parks Development Committee, Museo ni Jose Rizal Fort Santiago, NHCP – Museo ni Jose Rizal, Calamba, NHCP Museo ni Jose Rizal Dapitan, and 160th Birth Anniversary of Dr. Jose Rizal. It will have a replay on June 20, Sunday at 4:00 pm (Manila time) on ANC.
